  • Roof . Slate, copper and clay / concrete roofs have a life expectancy of 50 years; Asphalt roofing shingles, 20; Shingles fiber cement, 25; and wood shingles, 30 years. However, the life span of a roof depends on local weather conditions, the correct construction and design, material quality and proper maintenance.
  • Counters . Natural stone, which is cheaper than a few years ago and is gaining popularity, can last a lifetime. Cultured marble, by contrast, is relatively short, with an expectancy of less than 20 years.
  • Garages . Garage doors last 10 to 15 years, and bright inserts 20.
