The Difference Between Forms 1040EZ, 1040A and 1040

Wanting to know the real differences between the federal income tax form 1040?

These forms are actually much more similar than many people think.

the only real difference between the forms is the amount of information reported.

IRS has a list of items which, if reported on your return, require using either Form 1040A or Form 1040 instead of Form 1040EZ.

Can not use 1040EZ when registering dependents

If you have any dependents listed on your return, you can not use Form 1040EZ because there is not room to list of dependents.

However, if you do not have dependents, and so understand that you must use the 1040EZ form, it is also acceptable for you to use Form 1040A or Form 1040 instead

He is like a glass of water

Compare these forms to 24 ounces of water (your tax information) in a container and 3 glasses :.

  • 8 glass ounces - (1040EZ)
  • 12 glass ounces - (1040A)
  • 24-ounce glass - (1040)

You can not, without making a mess, pour the entire 24-ounce container of water in the 8 (1040EZ) or 12 ( 1040A) ounce glasses, believe it or not just does not fit.

you should use the larger, 24 (1040) of the glass ounce, to be able to empty the entire container.

However, if you place a container of 8 ounces of water (your tax information) and the same 3 glasses, you might choose to empty the container in any of the 3 glasses as hold it in one of them.

In this scenario, then it would not be necessary to use the 24-ounce drink for just 8 ounces of water, it certainly would not hurt to do so.

Items required for the 1040EZ form

there are a number of items you are allowed to have on your return to be eligible to use Form 1040EZ

These include :.

  • with the filing status is single or married filing jointly
  • being less than 65 and not blind at the age of the end of
  • pAS with dependents
  • with taxable income of less than $ 100,000 and taxable income of only the wages, salaries, tips, unemployment compensation, dividends permanent Fund of Alaska, scholarships and grants taxable grants, and taxable interest of $ 1 500 or less
  • does not claim any adjustments to income as a deduction for IRA contributions or student loan interest and does not claim any credits other than the earned income credit
  • not because of employment taxes on household wages paid to a household employee
  • earned advice must be included in boxes 5 and 7 of your form W-2 and you are not a debtor in a bankruptcy case filed chapter 11 after October 16, 05.

while these are the requirements to be able to file the 1040EZ form, and while it is true that if these are the only things your return contains, you can use form 1040EZ, you can certainly still choose to use either form 1040A or form 1040 in the case.

in the end, it's as simple as ...

you can use the more detailed forms for a simple return, if you have information that requires you to use more detailed forms, then you can not use the simpler forms.

The IRS does not worry if you choose to use Form 1040A or Form 1040 instead of Form 1040EZ information is still reported correctly
