Today, only a very small number of doctors use electronic health records and prescribe medication electronically.
But almost everyone in the health care industry sees the potential to go electronic.
The most recent move to an electronic healthcare system in the pharmaceutical industry, where two of the largest electronic prescribing companies merged.
SureScripts and RxHub were originally separate companies that had different roles in e-prescribing - SureScripts send prescriptions electronically to pharmacies, RxHub sends and retrieves information about insurance coverage of a drug
RxHub also sent electronically. patients prescriptions for mail order pharmacies to fill.
the services of both SureScripts and RxHub are supported by the software prescription doctors office, which must be certified by the two companies, reported Washington Post .
doctors do not have to pay for electronic services. But they must buy themselves the electronic prescribing software.
Now, with the two companies together, they can help streamline the entire process.
Many advocates argue that electronic prescribing can reduce costs, reduce medical errors and office, and improve the overall quality of health care.
"As we move to paperless processes, we improve the efficiency, safety and quality," said Rick Ratliff, CEO at SureScripts.
