Chicago Celebrates National Month of the heart and Valentine's Day -

valentinebox Chicago celebrates the National Month of the heart and Valentine's Day this year by placing 100 hearts which are 5 feet tall along Michigan Avenue. The statues are a collaboration between artists Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Columbia College.

The statues are intended to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and are called the campaign "Hearts a Bluhm" of the Heart Institute of the Hospital Bluhm.

Currently heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. To reduce the risk of heart disease, there are preventable measures that people can take. Health experts advise people to choose a healthy diet and lifestyle by exercising, counting calories, avoiding drinks and foods with added sugars, drinking in moderation and more.

People with a family history of heart disease should ensure they follow these guidelines because the family history is a major risk factor. Other risk factors include smoking, excess consumption, poor diet and lack of physical activity.
