It's been a busy year for the construction and expansion of Erie Insurance.

Earlier in January, the Technical Training Center opened. Then in June, the Heritage Centre Erie Insurance, a building that celebrates 0 years of history ERIE, opened its doors.

The latest addition to the campus is ERIE Erie Armory. This building is the former home of Pennsylvania National Guard 112th Infantry Regiment. For 0 years, the men and women of the regiment came to the arsenal for training, deployment and to meet with friends and family after their return home.

ERIE bought the building in 2013 with a goal of preserving the historic structure and turn it into office space.

Before that happens, the 112th was honored with the dedication of an historical marker at the Armory. This patriotic event was attended by members of the 112th. Here are some fun facts about the 112th and the Armory building:

  • The 112th used the Armory until July 07 , then relocated to the Preparation Centre for the Pennsylvania National Guard then newly built near Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania .
  • The original section of the Armory was built in 1920. An expansion has doubled the space in 1929. The structure consisted of a building and drilling administrative room. A new entry is newly built to be used by REA employees will begin work there this fall.
  • The armory was designed by Joseph F. Kuntz, architect armory noted. He also designed the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the Atlantic building in Philadelphia, with at least 18 armories in western Pennsylvania.
  • The armory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The ERIE restoration of the 24,000 square foot building meets the requirements of Pennsylvania historical Commission and museum.
