Of course, big companies are not the only ones at risk of a breach of data. For every large company that is the victim of a data breach, many other small businesses fall prey as well.
David Kennedy is closely following these developments. Indeed, he is the founder and senior security consultant senior TrustedSec, a security services company with several of the largest US companies as clients. He recently took time to answer a few questions about one of the biggest threats to business today and offer trusted cyber security tips for small companies.
regarding corporate security, do you think things are getting better or worse?
worse. There was enormous data loss increases, in particular as regards credit cards and healthcare information. Today you are increasingly seeing piracy countries in large enterprises. They seek competitive information that allows them to compete with US companies at half the cost. Iran is one country that has been doing very well in this kind of cyber war over the years. You also see the organized crime syndicates are the same.
Ransom situations are also on the rise. In them ransomware take over the information of a company, encrypt and hold hostage until the company pays a large sum of money to recover. This often occurs over a long period of time. Cryptolocker was a ransomware Trojan that targeted computers using Windows back in 2013. He extorted millions of dollars from his victims.
Are there positive developments you see happening?
There is a bumpy road, and the United States are behind the European countries. You do not see this kind of large-scale violations abroad.
I testified before Congress twice cybersecurity. A positive development is the new decree of President Obama who said that "cyber-enabled" malicious activities are a national threat. It also establishes penalties and other consequences for the individuals and entities engaged in such activities.
Do you think that small businesses are increasingly a target for security holes?
Absolutely. for each major data breach that you hear in the news, there are dozens of violations affecting small businesses small business data breaches are particularly damaging;. while Target has the resources to withstand a blow to its bottom line, a company or business more little could be forced to shut down if the breach is sufficiently serious.
What are your top security suggestions for small businesses?
First, make sure your employees are aware of what phishing schemes and train like to avoid. Individuals are increasingly targeted with more personalized messages that contain malicious links. This is one of the most common ways and easier to get access to a system.
Second, practice good security around passwords. Do not use the same password for a system to another, giving hackers access to everything they guess right once. Consider using a two-factor authentication; if your password is compromised, the second method to connect protect you. Also consider using "passphrases" that contain spaces. Most web pages online (and Windows) support phrases. For example, "I like to walk to the lake!" Is a complex password and easy to remember.
My final suggestion is security to ensure someone on your staff has a good understanding of the latest threats and security defenses. it does not have to be full time job instead, it could be done part-time by a person or by a contractor. the important thing is that someone is stay on top of the company's protection

in your experience, do you think that most companies have good coverage of safety assurance of data in place?
I do not. This does not mean something companies have to look for very long, but it becomes the new standard. Regardless of the company or its size, it is only becoming more important to have a safety data coverage in place.
