"Treat yourself" and "YOLO" (you only live once ) became popular mantras to justify all kinds of discretionary spending.
But how can you splurge on yourself without feeling guilty? Or worse, wiping out your bank account in the process?
Consider these five tips for smart splurges.
Build them into your budget
rather than waiting until you get a bonus or a tax refund to make follies, to integrate them into your budget on a regular basis.
depending on your financial situation, it could mean 5 or 10 percent of your after-tax income once you have taken care of the needs and save some money for retirement.
budgeting for splurges mean we hope you will not feel deprived and wind blow your entire bonus or tax refund without thinking through.
putting aside money for these special purchases also removes any guilt you may feel about splurging because you have already planned for this.
If you are determined in how to spend this money, you can avoid stupidly wasting $ 5 here and $ 10 there. As long as you do not go over the amount in your budget, splurge on anything that makes you happy.
Focusing on the experiences
Research shows that money spent on experience brings more happiness than material things, do not automatically equate splurges with car fancy or luxury watches.
Some of my favorite splurges were experiences like seeing a Broadway show, dinner and drinks at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo (where much of "Lost in Translation" was filmed) and travel from one year to Washington, DC with friends.
Another advantage of spending your money on fun experiences that is not associated maintenance costs. A more expensive home not only means a larger mortgage, but often just spend more money on landscaping, heating and cooling, and furniture.
Souvenirs made through life experiences do not require oil changes or cleaning or dry sprinkler systems to maintain.
Make sporadic splurges
If you are eating every night of the week or buying ever new shiny shoes, these splurges quickly lose their appeal.
Behavioral psychologists call this "hedonic adaptation," which adapt to a lifestyle flashier and ceases to give you the same satisfaction he did in the beginning.
If you are splurging more sporadic, it feels special when you do indulge. You could save a fixed amount for special purchases every month and use that money for a little madness different each month.
Alternately, you could save up the value of money madness for something more than a few months.
research your options
Often there is more than one path (and a price) to the madness you want . You can often get what you want for less by finding Groupon, discount gift cards, promotional codes and online sales or traveling during less popular times of the year.
For some people, it does not feel like a true madness if they are carefully googling codes or comparing prices.
But for people like me, madness is much sweeter knowing that I did my homework and got the best price possible.
watches over her
intelligent madness is that you remember and treasure, not something you buy on impulse and regret later. Tweet this
There is something to be said for spontaneity, but to avoid buyer's remorse, give yourself time to think before you buy this bag imported designer or car.
one of my favorite tips to consider purchasing is to create a Pinterest secret council of the things you want to buy. Pin the element now and if you want even 24 hours from now, go ahead and treat yourself.
You often find that you really do not want the item that much anyway. A variation on this is to add the item to your online shopping cart, and then close your browser without checking.
You might get an email the next day, asking you to verify and offer you a discount code, but you'll need to be able to make the actual distinction will of the element of the look for a discount.
Tell us, what is your favorite way to splurge? How do you balance the desire to splurge with the need to save?
