Beach spectators: Worry less about sharks and more about surfing and the risk of sand -

There are only a few weeks in the summer and August is an important month range. One of the most highly touted scary stories each season are the shark attack reports. Here in New England, people may be more nervous than usual in light of a recent attack pretty awful white shark off Cape Cod. Fortunately, this encounter between man and beast was not fatal - you can hear about his experience surviving
It is easy to understand why these events are riveting -. It is the stuff of nightmares. But should it be? It was the attack of white shark first confirmed in Massachusetts in 76 years. For the media attention they get, shark attacks are rare. Observers of the ocean tell us that you have more of a chance of dying from a collapse of the sand hole of a shark attack, but you are not likely to have nightmares about sandcastles. But maybe you should be.
Another danger very common in ocean currents are rip. spectators beach should be sensitive to these narrow channels of powerful water that pull swimmers directly beach. They can occur at any beach with breaking waves, sadly illustrated by the recent drowning in Lake Michigan and Toronto. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, more than 80 percent of water rescues on surf beaches are due to rip current and represent approximately 100 drownings per year.
