News reports of various states are warning car buying consumers to be alert for vehicles that have damaged by Superstorm Sandy. In states directly affected by the floods, authorities issue warnings and advice for consumers - Officials of the New Jersey state remind us that Sandy flooded cars can be sold, but they must be properly titrated as such
consumer car-buying in others. States should also be wary because the damaged cars are often professionally refurbished and shipped to other parts of the country to be sold, where consumers are unlikely to be on alert. We noted earlier that even when cars "clean well," they may well have electrical damage or engine that area later - this is especially true of saltwater damage
The Commission Motor Vehicle New Jersey offers the following. reasonable steps that used car buyers should take before making a purchase.
- See the history of the title of the vehicle and be wary if the vehicle has been titled several times over a short period of time
- get a history report vehicle to the dealer, or get one yourself from a trusted source; this will let you know if the car was damaged in the past.
- Look for the name of an insurance company on the history of the title, and contact the company to obtain vehicle information.
The MVC also offers NJ ways to spot a car from flood damage:
- a moldy or musty odor or strong odor of air freshener throughout the car
- Rust on metal parts where water would normally not reach
- water-colored upholstery or water damage to the door panels and seat belts
- mildew, silt or debris in the area around the engine compartment, under the carpet or in the trunk.
