Your roadmap for a great road trip -

Tongs certificate. Sun block check. Bug repellent verification. Lists are a great way to keep you organized and put you on the road faster when walked on a road trip. A week or two before the arrival of the great day, make a list of everything you need to do and pack (and be sure to leave enough room so you can see out of your rearview mirror). Here are some ideas to help you:

Planning the route
Construction can strike anywhere, at any time during the summer. Check dmv.org for advice on avoiding these areas, or know where congestion is possible and plan extra time to travel through the region.

right Budget
It is easy to plan the cost of the hotel, but make an accurate budget for meals (or the grocery store, if you want to oven) and gas costs. Go to fueleconomy.gov for a handy calculator to understand the costs of gas before hitting the road.

Pick checks or prepaid credit cards
Everybody is going green these days of travel, but when you travel, leave the green at home and packing travelers checks or purchase prepaid credit cards instead. It is a medium safer and smarter travel.

Check the glove box and mix in a disposable camera
The salts and ketchup packets, towels and not to fold the cards, check the glove box for some other travel essentials like your insurance card and cards or numbers for emergency road service. Also, mix in a disposable camera in case of a collision. While most travelers have cell phones with cameras now, it's good to have a backup in case your cell phone gets too full of other valuable photos that you have not yet had the opportunity to Download.

Make room for a pet carrier
Y Fido and his Frisbee headed to the beach with you? Use a pet carrier or other pet-buckling devices to keep it safe for the ride. In the case of an accident, the REA provides pet insurance coverage (as part of your auto insurance) for your furry four-legged friends, but why spoil a getaway with trips to the vet? It is best to keep it safe right of the bat. Oh, and do not forget to pack a portable water bowl and some extra kibble for rest areas.

Stack on snacks smart
Chips, chocolate and pop. The dream of meal for each child. To avoid the sugar high after every rest stop and fill up gas, pack a small cooler filled with bottled water, cereal bars, crackers and fruit. Avoid salty foods or sodas that can actually make you thirsty or heavy foods that can make you tired.

Know your GPS
Whether a TomTom, Magellan, Garmin GPS system or your smartphone, be sure to have navigation systems that you can plug into your vehicle. They will prevent you from spacing out on the road and prevent these arguments "Which way do I turn?". Now you can pay attention to the road instead of listening back seat drivers yelling on which way to go.

Take techno-entertainment for the road

"on my summer vacation, I packed ..." or "I see a license plate from Ohio. "Remember this? The children used to play travel games to pass the time. Today, however, many will not leave home without their iPods, DVD players and PS2s. These nifty devices help prevent repetition, "Are we still here?"

Remember an emergency travel kit
Have insect bites, splinters, a flat tire or a dead battery? Emergency travel kit can save the day. Be sure to pack a flashlight, flares, first aid kit, jumper cables, blanket, gloves, paper towels and basic tools

To- Do:. Checking the car

Check all fluid levels, belts and tires before hitting the road to prevent slippage which could keep your family stranded roadside instead of the beach.

and last but not least, drive safely!
