Florida's candidates for governor Spar Over Medicaid fraud -

Florida Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink and Attorney General Bill McCollum are both running for governor in the Sunshine State. So where are these two start pointing the finger and smear? Medicaid fraud, of course.

Sink recently attacked McCollum for bad work statistically the state has made reining in Medicaid fraud since he took office the Attorney General. Florida spends over $ 3.2 billion in Medicaid fraud each year.

When McCollum was appointed, the number of fraud cases has actually decreased 355 open since 04. There were 372 cases of fraud in 08 and 09, compared to 727 in 04 and 05.

McCollum is now deflect the blame on the federal government.

According to Miami Herald McCollum sent two letters last year to US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking Florida to be lifted from a federal rule that allows not to screen Medicaid States claims to find fraud patterns.

McCollum argued that the law hindered his ministry to make any progress on Medicaid fraud. His request was granted last year, but will not be in force before the end of this year.

Sink jumped on the excuse of McCollum noting that other States have overcome federal rules in recent years. To help fight against fraud, Sink has proposed the creation of an Inspector General Medicaid Fraud and sending invoices to recipients of Medicaid so they can report overcharges.

Medicaid costs in Florida will reach $ 19 billion in 2010 and to provide health insurance services to 2.8 million people-about 14 percent of the state population.

If you thought the health care issues were used as political leverage on the federal level, you would be mistaken.
