Breast cancer Protection Act patients were recently introduced by representative Rosa DeLauro but has not yet been passed by Congress. However, Rep. DeLauro sent letters to health insurance companies this week to ask for their help in the implementation of the provisions of the new legislation before it is adopted.
Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act will provide coverage for women who receive mastectomies to stay in hospital for 48 hours after surgery. And legislation requires health insurance companies to provide clear explanations of the benefits to consumers with breast cancer.
WellPoint already stepped up and announced that it would implement the main provisions of the legislation on breast cancer before it even gets a vote in Congress. WellPoint follows most of the provisions in many states, but the implementation of the plan in each state will increase uniformity.
Sam Nussbaum, the chief medical officer for WellPoint said: "Women who are recovering from breast cancer surgery, in consultation with their doctor, will decide whether hospitalization for 48 hours is required. We are committed to make medical coverage decisions for women with breast cancer that are consistent with the latest science and clinical research. It is important for us and our members that WellPoint continues to lead in this area. "
