New Report: California high number of children are uninsured -

The proportion of children without health insurance in California is higher than average national and most other states, according to a new report from the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF). One in 10 children in California, which translates to more than 1.1 million children were uninsured in 2011.

California has a government sponsored several programs that offer affordable health insurance to California children and adolescents. Healthy Families is available for those who do not have insurance and do not qualify for free Medi-Cal coverage. Benefits include health, dental and vision. The program is able to offer the plans because of partnerships with a number of different insurance companies.

The CHCF report provides an overview of trends in California health insurance coverage and insurance programs for children in the state. Other notable statistics:

  • California residents aged 18 and younger - 56 percent had private insurance, 38 percent had Medi-Cal or Healthy Families and 11 percent were insured in 2011.
  • Employer-sponsored coverage declined 16 percent from 02 to 2011.
  • public coverage through Medi-Cal and healthy families increased 46 percent 02 to 2011.
  • uninsured children were much more likely than those with coverage to face barriers to health care access.
  • Nevada has the highest number of uninsured children and Massachusetts has the lowest.

decline is partly due to the reduction of government funding for state public insurance, as well as the decrease in employer-sponsored coverage. In the future, about one million uninsured children may be eligible for Medi-Cal or private coverage through the California Health Benefits Exchange, which is on track for registration from October 2013. immigrant children without papers do will not be eligible, however.
