As California faces one of the largest deficits in the nation, they pay millions each year for health insurance and the costs of health care for inmates. California residents are not only paying for the costs of health care, but they pay for these prisoners are kept as well.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Californians will pay more than $ 50 million this year for the treatment of 25 prisoners with about $ 20 million being used to pay the guards. These prisoners are "permanently medically unfit" and are often in comas or paraplegics.
Last year the former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has enacted a law "medical parole" which could reduce the amount spent taxpayers the health of prisoners and guards. the medical parole would allow prisoners unable to receive parole from prison for treatment and pay for it on their own or through a government program. Word eliminate also the need to keep these prisoners.
what happens if a prisoner is released on parole and survives the expectations of doctors? the prisoner would be returned to prison if there was a threat to society. Sounds like a good idea, but it has still to be implemented. Not one prisoner was granted a medical parole and was scheduled to be examined at the medical parole.
Sending prisoners to the hospital for care are not uncommon and thousands go each year to treat in California. Some prisoners will even go to the hospital for physical therapy after knee replacement surgery.
