As students return to school or go for the first time, they have much to be excited. Unfortunately, health insurance can not be on their minds, but it is always important to remember.
Many colleges and universities now require students to have health insurance. Some universities have even started students automatically enrolled in their health plan, then let the students forgo coverage or show proof of coverage before starting classes.
But students should not use the university's insurance plan and it is not always the best idea. The first place to check health insurance is with the parents. Due to the reform of health care, many young adults can now stay on the health plan of their parents until they turn 26.
For those who can not students should compare their options between the college plan to an individual policy.
Here are some pros and cons of student health insurance:
- benefits and networks typically have limited
- may exclude coverage for injury or alcohol-induced diseases,
- act more like a temporary policy coverage ends months in graduation and
- No exclusions for pre-existing conditions .
Advantages and disadvantages of individual health insurance:
- More coverage and more extensive network of health care providers,
- will not finished after graduation and when a student decides to cancel the policy,
- may not cover pre-existing conditions,
- may be more affordable than a college plan and
- The plans can be customized to provide certain advantages.
Not every student will be able to get an individual policy, not every student wants a college level, but they should at least consider their options before going to college.
